Question about Canadian-marked tall socks... Empty Question about Canadian-marked tall socks...

Post by Wgrenadier Fri Feb 20, 2015 8:51 pm

    Hi Guys,

I just picked up these hose tops with Canadian broad arrows and was wondering if anyone could identify/date them for me. They were sold as "Highlander socks or high boot over socks" in the listing. From the pictures I have seen, it appears that Canadians wore tall puttees without any socks early in the war, so would these be a later issue? Thanks for your help!

I've been informed that these are likely CWAC tall stalkings for cold weather duh

Question about Canadian-marked tall socks... Empty Hose Tops

I would agree that what you have are CWAC related.   Here is an image of a Canadian marked pair of wartime Hose Tops.

Thanks for sharing the pictures Ed!

Those are great hose tops (they almost look like sweater sleeves). Would these have been worn later in the war, as it appears they didn't wear any socks with their tall puttees early on?

Question about Canadian-marked tall socks... Empty Hose Tops

I am pretty sure that socks are being worn under the puttees as wearing the boots in bare feet would be quite uncomfortable. The issue and wear of hose tops may have been dictated by regiment and school dress regulations as well as the availability of hose tops within the supply system.

That makes sense! I wouldn't want to wear ammo boots without some form of sock either!

I know that hose tops appeared in the British Army sometime during the Great War, but all the pictures of the Canadians in Hong Kong I have seen show just tall puttees. I suppose it could be different for other regiments at that time.
