Canadian and Allied Jews at the Raid on Dieppe
(August 1942)
Compiled and researched by Martin Sugarman
(Archivist, British Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women – AJEX - Jewish Military Museum, London)
Information for this list has come mainly from "Canadian Jews at War" - 2 volumes published by the Canadian Jewish Congress in 1947/8, Montreal, and various other sources as mentioned, including a personal visit by the author to the Canadian War Cemetery at Dieppe. But the Congress volumes only give those KIA, WIA and POW - not those who served at Dieppe! The list is of course, therefore, very much incomplete; it does not, for example, include Jewish Canadians who died of wounds after the raid. and were buried at various locations in Europe where they happened to be imprisoned, or England where they were in hospital, or all those who returned safely or who evaded capture and escaped much later after the raid but are not recorded as having been connected with the raid.
Further details came from requests for help put in various journals and newspapers in the UK and Canada, as well as from organisations like the Commando Association, and many veterans - Jewish and non-Jewish - and their families responded. Their help was inestimable.
NB the note "photo" or "letter" means these are at the AJEX Museum, London.
