Wood Optics & Signalling Boxes Empty Wood Optics & Signalling Boxes

    Post by 37patt Tue Aug 02, 2011 6:35 pm

Picked up this box at a flea market today, it is empty unfortunately but will still make a very nice addition to the collection. My only question is - what the heck did it hold? I'm assuming target front sight inserts but that is really only a guess.
    Thanks for any help.

Also picked up a Lamp Beacon Signaling and am again at a bit of a loss as to who used it.

I take it that you are assuming that the No4 refers to the rifle but you'll note that the nomenclature does not specify that the accessories are for a rifle.... REL leads me to believe that the box is for accessories for some type of optics device. It will be interesting to see if anyone actually is familiar with this item.

Are there any fittings inside it or is it just an empty box?

Infanteer is right, its probably for some kind of optical instrument. The maker is Research Enterprises Ltd, who were based in Toronto and produced all types of technical stuff such as sighting telescopes, binoculars etc. The 191-C is a typical serial number format for them, the "C" signifying "Canadian". They made some radio items too.

Here is the interior of the box. The whole thing is only about 1 inch deep.

The beacon light is also puzzling - looks to be Navy from the paint but I can't think why they would require alligator clips to hook it up to a battery.

Thanks for the thoughts so far.

    Thanks for the picture :)

This is just a guess of course, but that looks to me like it was designed to hold lenses for some type of telescope or binocular set. Look like they would be stored glass up, protected by the felt strips.

Let me look into this a bit more, I'm interested now :)

    Thanks for the help Rob.
The box is about 9" by 5 1/2" and 1 1/2" thick and the interior holes are about 1/2" deep by 1 5/8" diameter. The rectangular spaces are 1/2" deep 5/8" and almost 1 3/4" inch long. Hope this helps at least a bit.
