Tank Monument - Olds, Alberta

This one sits outside the #105 Legion branch in Olds where I am a member. It was recently replaced with this "Easy Eight" model Sherman. For many years an Israeli modified M50 Super Sherman sat here. This old gal looks much better. It has since been named "Archie" by local students.

I think the purchase of the M50 Super Sherman for this Legion was covered in Legion Magazine in the early 1990s, I believe at the time the Legion thought they had bought a Firefly.

Lol! Sometimes I wonder about the staff at #105, they seem more interested in meat draws than military history. Good place to hang out and chat with the local vets though.

I am sure that whoever sold the Legion the M50 was 'laughing all the way to bank' on that deal. Mind you, there are a fair number of equally well informed people in Canada who think that the M4A2E8s are Fireflies as well.

So, where did the M50 end up?

From what I hear, the Museum of the Regiments in Calgary traded the Easy Eight for the M50.
