Hi, Can anyone tell me if the Thompson smg was used by Canadian Forces after the introduction of the Sten, as I've read of a couple of British units that continued to favour the Thompson even though the Sten was available, and was the Thompson used by RCN Commandos ?? Kev

Re: Small Arms
I am no expert, I know the 48th Highlanders of Canada when they were in Italy had Thompsons. When they went to Holland they got stenguns; I believe they weren't very happy about that :-)

Re: Small Arms
Canadian Army overseas policy was to issue the TSMG in the AAI (Sicily and Italy campaigns) and to issue the SSMG in NWE. Discussion over existing War Establishments resulting in amending the term 'TSMG' to simply 'SMG'.

Re: Small Arms
Canadians used the Thompson in theatres where they had access to American supply chains for the .45ACP. Elsewhere, the Sten went into use, particularly where there was also access to captured German 9mm.

No. See my post above.shootemup wrote:Canadians used the Thompson in theatres where they had access to American supply chains for the .45ACP. Elsewhere, the Sten went into use, particularly where there was also access to captured German 9mm.
In the AAI supplies of .45ACP was assured through British supply. In NWE 9mm was supplied. Armies do not rely on the proximity of allied forces for items of common issue.
