To some it would just seem like an old military decorated box, but the engineer it was likely given too would know how dangerous this little object could be. It is actually a ww2 German Anti-personnel mine or Schu-Mine 42, which contained a 200g charge and was ignited by a zz42 fuze. The original fuze here has been set into an added block at the front. Difficult to detect being made of wood, that dogs were used during the Normandy Campaign to sniff them out
I see now the connection with this squadron and horses, as they were formed in Calgary, nicely decorated with the maple leafs picked out in gold leaf, on closer look there is also a three letter code stamped on the lid htk, (under the horses rear), which was a "furniture maker" near Nuremburg from looking in my code book,
I presume they were given out to the disbanding men in 1946, a friend mentioned he had seen one with just a British RE cap badge on the lid
