A friend of mines relative was in the SDG. They have a image and write-up on him at the Legion stating he served in Italy and France where he was killed 2 weeks after d-day. As far as I know the SDG were never in Italy? Anyone have any input on this. Thx Brian

The family may have been confused about his military service or depending on his rank he may have served in Italy to gain some front-line experience before returning to the UK or perhaps transferred to the SD&G from another unit. I have a photograph of a member of the Black Watch in Italy wearing 1 Div patches, so some guys did get posted around.

Thanks for the reply Ed. I have asked my friend to see his service records as he says the Italy star is not mentioned. Also he was a private but the pic shown he is wearing corporal stripes. I said maybe rose in the ranks and reverted to private as that happened quite a lot. Only statement from the Legion plaque is he joined the SDG. Service records could shed some light as should have any movements. Cheers Brian
