this one turned up in the week, took me a while to figure out the right spelling of caubeen, but had not seen one before and thought it was a nice cap

Re: Irish Regiment Of Canada Caubeen
Not sure if it was worn during the war (maybe someone knows?) but the Irish OR's had a dark green feather hackle and officer's was pale blue. Also the badge is worn over the opposite eye than a regular beret.

Re: Irish Regiment Of Canada Caubeen
I read that they were fazed out when the Khaki beret came in and these were only to be worn on leave, Yeah without a date hard to place a finger on when it was used but before the queens coronation
I did read about the hackle, though it did not mention the OR's, thanks for the info

Re: Irish Regiment Of Canada Caubeen
Nice caubeen! Cliff is heavily involved with the Irish Regiment, I'm sure he'll be along shortly with some input.
If you ever think about moving it along, I've been looking for one to add to my collection.

NO NO NO NO NO NO. The Caubeen was NOT phased out in place of that God Awful Khaki beret. This our normal headdress. The hackle was not worn until just post war. Yes blue for Offficers and SNCOs ORs wear the green hackle. The Touree was removed when the hackle was introduced. I know up until the 50s the touree was still present when a new caubeen was issued but it was removed before wear.
Your looks wartime, just based on the C /l\ too bad cant see a maker on it, but I suspect its a Hewer.
I have to say, that one sure is salty.

Re: Irish Regiment Of Canada Caubeen
thanks for the clarification Cliff, the book The Canadian Soldier is obviously wrong then,
A friend just sent me a picture of his Officers Caubeen, has the same material diamond as mine and indeed its a Hewer made example. So I believe mine is too like you mentioned.
Yes its pretty well worn, have the tally ends been cut at all or is this regular length?
