Here is one of my two Civil Defence helmets. It is the same as the helmet shown on page 16 of Tin Lids - Canadian Combat Helmets - 2nd edition by Roger Lucy. And as the book says, it would have been reissued in the post-WWII Cold War era to the city of Edmonton Civil Defence Corps. This one looks like it is in a bit better shape than the one shown in Tin Lids.

Shell is made by Canadian Lamp Co. and dated 1943. Liner is also dated 1943 and made by Viceroy Manufacturing Co.

I am Fred Armbruster the founder of the Edmonton Civil Defence Museum. I am looking to bring as many EDM helmets home. Can you help or have suggestions?

    Hi Fred,

I just had a look at your website and I really enjoyed it. Are you you looking for other CD items as well as the Edmonton helmets? I've got a variety of CD helmets but they are not exclusively from Edmonton.

    Cheers,

    Geoff

I know of quite a few people in Europe who have the same helmet...looks like they were distributed all over the place. Could be a feat to get them all back.

Your site looks great! And welcome to the forum!

Hi Dale! Thank you and I am happy you like the site!
The Brodie helmet was regular issue for the British and Canadian military. The helmets were then passed onto the CD departments and were mostly painted white. The helmets them self are very comfortable for being made of steel. The American version on the other hand was a torture device in my opinion.

Small point but if you are involved with a museum then details are important... MkII helmets are technically not Brodie helmets. Brodie helmets were issued during the First World War and while the shape is very similar it is not the same and the liner system in a Brodie helmet is completely different.
