Formation Patch Id? Empty Formation Patch Id?

Post by Bill Sun Nov 29, 2009 12:04 pm

This formation patch / batttle patch has puzzled me for quite awhile. It came in a box of CEF material with no post WW1 militaria in it. Not that that means the patches could be a later time period, but it did lead credence to the WW1 provenance. It is not on the Nicholson chart, but there are some errors and omissions on that chart. (Many of them have been corrected in Clive Law's DISTINGUISHING PATCHES(2nd Edition): shameless plug.) Then I came across an image of the patch on a CEF tunic in the Canadian War Museum holdings. This confirms it as a CEF era patch, but there is no positive identification. Does anyone have any info on this patch?

Bill, a bit of long shot and not direct identification, but do you have any provenance for the tunic you saw this patch attached to? My thinking, is if the tunic is attributable to a soldier, I can pull his Service Records and have a look at his movements.

This should narrow it down, and possibly give a definite identification to this patch.

I understand my proposal is somewhat half baked but then again, it might just work.

    Hello Bill:

I don't have them sitting here in front of me, but have you checked the formation sign pamphlets (No. 1 and No. 2) compiled many years ago by Major Waring?

    Regards,

Hi Adam, Wasn't in there as far as I could see. There doesn't seem to be any information on it anywhere. Some research at LAC came up with interesting info on battle patches, but nothing on this one.
One bit of speculation is that it may have had to do with the reinforcement / base camps in the UK, but again, nothing conclusive.
