"A unique and very interesting piece of First World War trench art.
This good quality bruyere pipe has been carved with the Battle Honours of the 27th (City of Winnipeg) Battalion. It is inscribed on the front 'WINNIPEG CANADA' with a maple leaf with the number '27' inside it. The pipe is covered with various other inscriptions, including the battles fought by the batallion: St Eloi, Ypres, Somme, Vimy, Fresnoy, Lens, Passchendaele, Arras, Amiens and Cambrai. On the back is insribed lots of initials under 'Band Pat'; the initials could help you find the names of the soldiers in this band.
There are other inscriptions, such as a scrull and crossbones, an arrow through a heart, etc - please see the various photos above for more detail.
The previous owner's great-grandfather was given this by members of the battalion while staying at the King Harold Ale House, in Waltham New Town. 'Waltham K-H' is also insribed on the pipe, which fits in with the history of the item. I assume that this was one of the places where Canadian soldiers lived during the war when on leave from the Western Front."
