War Service Badge "Service" class

I'm brand new on the forum. so please bear with me...........

One of my metal-detecting friends recently uncovered a long-buried sterling War Service Badge with the serial number 490865.

Several years back on this forum, I see "sniper1shot" mentioned he had the reference work for these, and offered to help with identifications. If either "sniper1shot" or another forum member could track down the recipient's name and regiment/unit and let me know, I'd be pleased to pass along the info.

That number might be his service number, or as they called it back then his regiment number. here is a link to the Library and Archives Canada site, all you have to do is enter that number. I am no expert in this field so I might be wrong.

Thanks for the note, Len............. I'd posted it incorrectly on this forum, and the query should have been on the WW2 forum as it's regarding a WW2 badge. I've reposted it there ........ Michael

I assume you are referring to the shield shaped general service badge? If so, there is no way currently to trace back that number.

Ok, note to self..... never again try to merge two topics on my stupid phone.

Sorry to disagree Cliff but many of these badges can be traced back to the owner. The problem is the rolls are hand written and not 100% complete.

If anyone is interested I can supply the name of a researcher who can access the rolls for you. I think he charges about $5 per look-up.

Ed, I have looked for these rolls at the LAC and have struck out. I was informed quite some time ago that there was no roll, and this is why I was unable to locate one. Hearing what you are saying is very pleasing to me. Of course in my case, most of the General Service Badges I own, came from either the veterans themselves, or their families, all I had to do was refer to their service records to verify I had the correct badge.
