I came across this bag a little while back and thought it was a name on the side, but am wondering if it was for a piece of equipment.  As it looks like it says "whistle" but unfortunately a bit un-clear, any ideas? has 5 metal "feet" on the bottom, that are attached inside to a piece of thin plywood which also acts as a base in the bag, dated 44 made by Pall Mall in Montreal, about 12 inch long, two carry handles and the zip closes over and a padlock can be added,

What you have was an issue 'attache case' used by the enlisted sailors to carry small items to and from the ship. The writing on the side is the owners name and beneath that his service number. This item was in use up to the late 60s. You can find some with the name and number embroidered in red thread. Those who were 'keeners' would do that especially if they had a short name.

A very useful item of kit to the ordinary sailor. I used mine until the handles wore out and then I took it to a shoe maker and had a leather handle sewn on the extend its life.

They can be found in 2 sizes,

Nice item as it brings back many memories for me..

Thanks Ed, I appreciate the help, I thought it was probably a name on the side. Agree useful piece even now, I just have a to have a bit of sewing done on the zip, all else is fine

    Thanks
