More on aluminum 1916 Canadian
Hello Gentlemen,
This is my first attempt at soliciting help identifying this unknown to me aluminum canteen with Canadian markings . So my attempt will be unsure and shakey! In the way of additional informatiom:I have several of these aluminum Canadian canteens. One is N.O.S. and has the strap stamped "C B" in one place and Lamontagne LTD. Montreal Canada. The felt cover is ink stamped with large "C'and arrow.Another example with actual wear has reminants of double ink stamped "c" arrow, faint but there. Its more narrow leather strap is stamped "Wilson & Son" ottawa, near by "C" arrow "8" and the date 1916. It's canvas insert is pen marked "G L ELLiot" on the underside of the shoulder area.

Neat Canteens!
Sorry I can't help you identify them though. It's interesting to see Lamontagne, Limited on leather goods, since I have seen them on WWI Canadian webbing as well.
Also, sorry that there hasn't been much a response to your original post. This forum can be rather lifeless at times!

Wgrenadier, Thank you for your reassurance that there is still life out there! These aluminum canteens have been an annoying unknown for ten years. The five copies I have all came out of a movie prop supplier out west USA which says government surplus Canadian to me. The pressed, not soldered construction says 1895-1915 manufacture going by Col.Read's 1900 Canteen study, "History of the Military Canteen" done for the USA government. So we know something! The straps are stamped Montreal and Ottawa. Does that indicate wide dispersal? Can someone read a date stamp under the black rivet in pictures above "19..8" ? Max

Jonhno, I am impressed and touched by your kind effort to locate this man's record. No doubt the right man, his name is written on the inside of the shoulder strap of the canteen with the 1916 date stamp into the leather. He would have been 32 years at the time of his signing the "Attestation" paper April 1918, no callow youth, this youngish man , and a gentlemen's valet at that! A heart-felt "Thank You" for finding this. Max(CanteenmanUSA)

Re: 1916 Aluminum Canadian Canteen
no problem Max, I should mention although the name (initials) match there is a chance it might not be your man, it could well be, though a matching service no. written on too would of course nail it.
but that is a useful tool for looking up marked items,
I am not up on this area of equipment,
cheers
John
