Here are some examples of the cloth/canvas black tankers beret. From what I can find these berets were worn as a work dress with the coveralls, I have seen these with cap badges at shows and in collections but not seen any pictures of troops wearing them with cap badges. The earliest one is 1940 made by Buffalo Cap in Winnipeg, I have seen most made by Uniform Cap MFG in Ottawa, the other manufacturer is Rogers-Rayman Industries in Toronto.
The Uniform Cap type is a thin cloth material, the Buffalo Cap material is a heavy cloth almost canvas, the Rogers-Rayman is also a heavy cloth/canvas. None of the berets have any type of backing or support for a cap badge, only the two vent holes and cloth tie straps.
