Nice Canvas Patch Haul
A young lady I work with brought these to the worksite today. She wanted $20 for them all, but I gave her much more than that. 11 of them are canvas. Nice to get a surprise lot of items like these once in a while.

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
I've heard of the 6 CTR flashes, but never seen one before. I knew they were a deal maker.
Any idea what the big balled goat represents?

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
Hi Dale,
Fomation patch for the 1st Canadian Armoured brigade, I think it was worn in 1941-42. Bill Alexander would no doubt be able to tell you more about it.
Thanks
Lorne jr

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
Wow Dale, Christmas came early for you. You just never know when or how these kind of things will show up.
As Lorne already stated the well hung ram was a short lived version of insignia for the 1st Canadian tank brigade. Fairly rare and usually sells for a couple hundred dollars.
The canvas 6 CTR flash is much rarer and was again a short lived type of insignia for the First Hussars. I believe only uses for a year or two. I have only seen two for sale and don't remember exactly how much it sold for but definatly many hundred dollars.
I managed to find a cloth version of the 6 CTR flash a while back but not the printed version.
Again, great find. All nice items.

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
Fantastic buy. As indicated the well hung goat was the first variety of formation patch for the 1 CATB. The 6 CTR were only in use from about January 1943 until the re-organization of the 2nd and 3rd CATB that took effect in the late spring of 1943. It is not established if the 6 CTR patches, though issued were ever taken into general wear.

I think a couple of us on here would be interested in these if they are available.

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
Dale, Is the 1st CATB patch reverseable? (Eg It could be worn either obverse or reverse?)

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
It looks like it. The first and second pictures show the front and back of the group. I wasn't certain which side was better than the other though.

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
Some, but not all of them were made that way, so the goat could face forward when worn on either sleeve.

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
One side looks a bit better than the other...but it could possibly be good enough to be reversible.

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
Thanks for the information Bill! So, would this be an early or late variation of this patch?

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
No information has been found to indicate the time frame for the different types. The diagonal embroidery suggests that this is an English made patch.

Re: Nice Canvas Patch Haul
They were apparently left in a rental property her family moved into in Red Deer, Alberta. No family ties.
